OBJECTIVE: Reduce roadside litter
OVERVIEW:

A state’s department of transportation wanted to add littering awareness items to its anti-litter campaign.  They printed the program’s logo on a variety of products, including 400,000 plastic bags.

DISTRIBUTION: The bags were distributed at the state’s welcome centers, interstate rest areas, information booths, and speaking engagements.
OUTCOME:

The D.O.T.’s Public Affairs Director reported that after two years, “Visible roadside litter has been reduced 12% and state taxpayers have been able to save in excess of $200,000 in reduced litter control cost.”  The department thus planned to continue the program through the end of the decade and possibly beyond.
